Honest and Courageous.

In all honesty, it's hard to express how I feel about this book.
It is a traumatic, and deeply moving account of a mothers grief and struggle, to cope and come to terms with the loss of her child.
It is beautifully written and gripped me from page one. The authors honesty and expressive writing held me captivated...tossed by so many varied emotions as I read.
This is a personal account of tragic loss, and as such I find it hard to know if I should recommend it.
And yet, Slings & Arrows, is a powerful story that could be of great help and comfort to someone grieving the loss of a precious child.

Gathering Storm...FREE

What with editing and illness, it has taken a while to get Gathering Storm, the thrilling sequel to Through a Glass, published. However, at last the book is out there and doing extremely well.

Excellent. This is a really good story.

This is Nate Roten's debut novel. It was among a number of books put forward for a vote. It won. Having voted for it myself, I received a copy to read and review. I'm glad I did, because this is a great read. The writing style is fast paced, pulling the reader ever deeper in. Okay, in the beginning, it's a bit slow going; but boy, once it gets moving!!

I'm not going to do a breakdown of the story, as others have already done that. Suffice to say, the story revolves around young Graham, a fifteen year old orphan with incredible powers. Graham knows that two mysterious people Chase and Cavaness hold the answers he needs to his nightmares and the strange powers...powers he can't control, and that he fears will harm those around him.
With his best friend Damien, he goes in search of Cavaness, but the boys find more than they bargained for.

Every character in the book has great depth, there was not one I could say was weak and unconvincing; even those with a minor role to play. I particularly loved little Ailey. She was basically silent, being a mute; but boy, did she make her presence felt.

However, I do have one complaint. In parts, I found myself editing! Which was annoying and a shame, as this is an excellent story. It's the reason I gave the book four, instead of five stars; which to my mind it deserved.

Aegis: Catalyst Grove is excellent and one I recommend. The way it ended, I know there is more to follow...great!!!

I eagerly awaited this book...I was not disappointed.

I loved Scribbles by Tommie Lyn, and have waited eagerly for the next book. And I have to say Scribbles 11: Escape, has not disappointed. What a thriller! It was great to catch again with Meg MacAllister, and a character I loved in the first book, Granny Mac. However, it’s important to state that Scribbles 11 stands alone, as the author ties things up nicely. But I would certainly suggest reading both the books, as they are great! The story quickly hots up, culminating in a pretty shocking scenario. Frighteningly, it is something that God forbid, could so easily happen in this day and age. Loved This!!

 

I loved this, it's become one of my favourite books. I wasn't sure when I first started to read it, as I thought it was about elves and such...not a subject I'm particularly interested in. I was imagining little people with long pointed ears, how wrong can you be!

To me this is very much an adult fantasy. The hero Duke Vahn is gorgeous! He's an Elva who are the superior race...tall, strong and elegant. Where as the Itzi are small, inferior and more often than not, slaves.
Kee a free Itzi is orphaned and chooses to become Duke Vahn's free will slave. Understandably, she falls for him. The Duke is a good man...authoritative, but kind and fair.

To me Kee epitomizes true self sacrifice and service. At first I found her irritating and annoying, but as I read on I grew to like her. She had great strength and integrity, both of which she certainly needs as the story unfolds.
This is the first of three books. I've read them all avidly and can't recommend them highly enough.
They are well written and challenge on the issues of prejudice, slavery and cruelty.

This short story is brill!!

 

 

Dust is brilliant! It's a short story, and on reflection probably just as well, due to the tension it engenders. It's a unique story! Well written and fast paced. It certainly makes you think. When I'd finished it, I found myself trying to figure out the best place to hide, if such a frightening scenario should happen in the here and now...scary thought.

Reading and Reviewing. .

I love to read, and I also enjoy reviewing books. Pretty much every book I read I review.
However, I like the whole process to be relaxing. I hate it when I feel under pressure to finish a book as quickly as possible.
That's fine if I'm not particularly enjoying it, but if I am, I like to savour a book and really let the story soak into my mind and imagination.
When reviewing, I always do my best to be fair and encouraging. Being a writer myself, I know how destructive a harsh review can be. Their is honesty, and then there's tearing an author's work apart...nit picking in some cases and making no attempt to repair the damage at any stage. No crumb of comfort to ease the authors damaged ego. Being creative, we are sensitive creatures.
Over the years of writing, I've had to acquire a thickish skin and broad shoulders. I've learned  reviews, valid though they are, are merely someone's personal opinion, and as such, will not effect my future as an author in any way. So, I shake my shoulders, brush myself off and keep writing. In the hope that one day I will produce if not a best seller, then certainly a book that makes an impact on those who read it.
So while I keep writing, I keep reading and reviewing. Learning from other authors, and I hope encouraging them along the way.
There are some great books out there, enough to keep me happy for many years to come. I look forward to the opportunity of reading and reviewing some of them; as I hope others will read and review mine.

Beautiful and Poignant.

 

 

 

Casa de Naomi by Paula Rose Michelson, is about Naomi a lovely young Jewish woman who due to unforeseen circumstances finds herself stranded and alone on Ellis Island...until an old lady named Tia rescues her. When I first started to read the book, I confess I thought the old lady along with help from the Ellis Island official was kidnapping Naomi. However, the opposite was true; Tia took Naomi home and looked after her. The old woman gave her a life and a future.
When Tia died, Naomi took over the work of helping the vulnerable young women arriving at Ellis Island. Sadly one day she rescued the wrong girl...Lola. What a nasty piece of work she is! I will say no more as I do not wish to give away any part of the story.
Casa de Naomi is quite the most beautiful and poignant story I've read in a long while. I found the style of writing both poetic and romantic. In some small way it reminded me of Song of Solomon.
Not one character, no matter how small the part they play in the story is side-lined. Each one is written with such depth. The author's portrayal of Spanish Harlem is so artistic; one can almost smell the food and spices in the market place.
This is a story based around the powerful human emotions of, deception, mistrust, love and betrayal.
It's a brilliant book, and really makes one think about the insidious evil that is anti-Semitism. I am so pleased I had the opportunity to read it. I can't wait to read book 2.

This is a book filled with twists and turns. Drama after drama unfolds in its pages, keeping the reader glued. To me the story was reminiscent of a dark mystery, with an equestrian backdrop. The story centres around Katie and her return to Radbourne, her grandmothers ranch. A place she was banished from as a child, in dark and mysterious circumstances. The writing was so descriptive; I could almost see the ranch, and the beautiful Arabian horses. At first, I found the relationship between Katie...more This is a book filled with twists and turns. A Great Read.

 

And Then Came a Lion by Cecilia Marie Pulliam is a great read. It's one of those books I was sorry to finish.
There were a few editing issues, nevertheless not enough to spoil my enjoyment of a really exciting story.
Susannah, the plucky heroin has a unique gift. She has dreams and visions of children being abducted by vile people. Because she sees the event ahead of time, she is able to rescue the children, all the while putting herself in grave danger.
This book tackles a subject that is very emotive. Yes, the story flows well, is fast paced, exciting, and filled with tension. However, I also found it challenging and at times moving. For me personally, it was a roller coaster ride of emotions, not least anger when you realise these awful things are happening in reality on a regular basis.
Like Susannah, I have to fight the hatred...the desire for revenge against the perpetrators of these heinous crimes against little ones.
I guess from this you can see how much the story affected me!
On a lighter note; I loved Susannah's dog, a Brittany spaniel called Buddy. Having never heard of the breed, I did a search...they sound like a lovely family dog.
Ms Pulliam has great descriptive skill. The way she writes you can't help but get involved with each and every character, good and bad.
I enjoyed this book very much, and look forward to reading the sequel.

I love the cover of the this book and the title : Seal of the King. It's what attracted me to get the book; as well as the Christian element in the story, which I liked. Also, I liked the way the story began,it drew me in. However, as I continued to read, there was to my mind, a lot of unnecessary detail, and because of that the story dragged in parts, which was a shame. I found myself skimming over a lot of it. As for the Dark One. I instinctively hated him and yet found him fascinating. From the way the story ends, it's clear there are more books to come in this series. So I will get the opportunity to find out what happens. Aside from the issues I've mentioned, I have to say this is a good read. In parts exciting and gritty. It will be fascinating to see how the story continues to unfold in the ensuing books.

My five star review of a great book. A Heart Deceived by Michelle Griep.

I'm not going to do a breakdown of the story, as it has already been done in other reviews.

A Heart Deceived, is a brilliant book. I'm not quite sure the title fits the story, but that's of minor importance and only my opinion.
This book is so well written,with wonderful prose that truly expresses the hard and dark days of old England. I could almost see and smell the squalor...feel Miri's suffering as she is falsely accused of madness, and along with her truly mad brother, Roland, is dragged off to the Sheltering Arms Asylum. While Ethan, the man she loves is accused of murder and thrown into Prison.
For me, the Christian message of faith and hope, tempered the darkness of this exciting and moving story.
This is a book that if I loaned to a friend, I would want back after they'd read it. If it was a paperback and not on my kindle, it would be added to the shelves of my small library of favourite books.
A Heart Deceived by Michelle Griep, is excellent and one I can truly recommend.

To have good editors is a real blessing, and I am blessed!
We authors go flying off into our various chosen worlds, without a care, or thought for grammar, spelling, or anything else we might consider boring and irrelevant.
For us, it's all about the story, the wonderful worlds we create and get lost in. And when we eventually come up for air, it's these wonderful editors who take our garbled offerings and make them fit for future readers. A round of applause, please, for all our long suffering editors.

I read this book during some of my bleakest times, and felt transported to a land of fantasy and mystery, just what I needed at the time.
I find Y. I. Lee's books excellent because they can be read purely as a novel by someone with no Bible knowledge whatsoever or they can be read in conjunction with Bible knowledge, enriching your understanding of what it is to have faith, and be willing to step out in that faith.
The vivid descriptions of her characters and surroundings transports the reader into the scenes with the characters, and makes the experience all the more meaningful.
I thoroughly enjoyed this read, and can not wait for the next one.

Zatao took an inaudible breath. She was beautiful. Her large grey eyes stared into his; reflecting the colour of her dress…bluer than the sky on a summer’s day. Her waist length hair, shone as black as a ravens wing. Zatao’s pulse raced, he wanted to brush the beads of sweat from his top lip, but his arms refused to move.
The silence in the room was as heavy as a wet blanket. Queen Ballista knew she had them all in her power. The desire to laugh was overwhelming, but she maintained an expression of sweet serenity. “Will you show me mercy, My Lord?” she asked again.
To Prince Zatao and the men with him, her voice sounded as soft as a kittens purr.
Smiling sweetly, she raised a hand.
Prince Zatao reached down took the proffered hand, and gently raised her to her feet.
Holding his hand in both of hers, Queen Ballista moved in close, so close, Zatao could feel her warm breath brush his neck.
Wrapping an arm round her slender waist he drew her closer. The feel of her body tight against his, made him breathless. Tightening his grip, he stared into her face.
Ballista returned his gaze, her triumphant smile fading as she stared into his dark merciless eyes. A sudden searing pain in her left side, made her cry out and clutch at his shirt front

Four star reveiw for, Shadows of the Realm.

When I first started to read the book, it took me a while to get into it. I found it a bit slow, and struggled to keep track of the many characters. However, the more I read, the clearer it became, and the more I got sucked into the story. I liked the way the author broke the story into chapters, separating the character groups, and making it easier to follow their individual journeys. I loved the idea of the different realms, and found the bonding sequences fascinating. I wished I could do it; I would love a creatura to bond with. Especially Blayke’s rat Fang…love pet rats! Any author who has a rat in their story, portrayed in a positive light, has me hooked. I’m not generally one for Dragons, but the way the author describes them is brilliant. Although trying to imagine them sitting on benches and eating at table, stretched my imagination somewhat! The way she describes the Dragons world, Vellonice, made me wish I could go there, it sounds wonderful. The Gorman’s sounded suitably gross, and certainly brought a touch of horror to the story. Prince Leon is pretty awful too. The way the book ends made me wonder where he fits in with the Gorman’s threatened destruction of Talia. I shall have to read the sequel to find out. A wonderful review, for Through a Glass. Fantastical Creatures.

Fantasy lovers, here’s a novel with fantastical creatures as well as real ones; eerie settings and true-to-life ones; frightening scenes and comforting ones. Irene and Stagman walk a frightening journey to rescue the prince. Lee tells her tale with a smooth flow of words and detailed descriptions. Some of her creatures are helpful and some oppose them and their quest. I hope you enjoy meeting Ezekiel, the white rat, as much as I did.

Even forest trees intrude into the lives of her characters, Irene and Stagman. Will they help or hinder? Will Irene and Stagman be able to rescue the prince in time? Will Irene and Stagman’s growing affection for one another turn into true love?

'Beginning Anew.' A new book, by the wonderful author Paula Rose Michelson.

Paula Rose Michelson is the wife of Lutheran Pastor, and Chosen People Ministries field Missionary, Ron Michelson. Five stars for Scribbles 11 : Escape. A Thrilling Thriller.

I loved Scribbles by Tommie Lyn, and have waited eagerly for the next book. And I have to say Scribbles 11: Escape, has not disappointed. What a thriller!
It was great to catch again with Meg MacAllister, and a character I loved in the first book, Granny Mac. However, it’s important to state that Scribbles 11 stands alone, as the author ties things up nicely. But I would certainly suggest reading both the books, as they are great!
Scribbles 11 takes you on a heck of a ride. Meg and Johnny have recently married, and are off on their honeymoon, which quickly turns into a nightmare, as a black SUV is following them. They have no idea why, and so begins a race to escape it.
To make matters worse, whenever they stop for food or gas they see Johnny’s face splashed across the TV’s, proclaiming him to be a murderer.
Now they are forced to keep a low profile, and when they stop on the roadside and briefly leave their car, it is stolen by a couple of thieves. Their only choice is to take the old truck the thieves have abandoned, which without giving the story away, proves to work in their favour.
The story quickly hots up, culminating in a pretty shocking scenario. Frighteningly, it is something that God forbid, could so easily happen in this day and age.
It is hard to say more without giving away spoilers. Suffice to say Scribbles 11: Escape, was everything I’d hoped, and kept me reading late into the night…I’m not complaining. It’s a great thriller, and I highly recommend it.

The Shadowed Valley: A book born out of pain.

I guess all authors love their books, we wouldn't write them if we didn't. But of the three books I've written, so far; The Shadowed Valley is special.
I wrote it in some small way to honour my sister, even naming the heroin, Celia, after her.
My sister was six years younger than me...a gentle, sensitive girl. I loved her to bits, we were very close.
In March 2005, we received the most awful news. My lovely sister was dead, murdered by her husband. He shot her in the head while she slept.
I will never forget that day, and I suppose in a way, The shadowed Valley is a constant reminder.
But writing the book helped me so much. I buried my grief within its pages. In a strange way, it kept Celia alive; even if only in my heart and imagination. I travelled with her through the shadowed valley...through the darkness and fear. She adored horses, so I gave her a horse, Sunrise to travel with.
I know in reality, she would never have coped in such a place, any more than I would. But my darkness and anger had to go somewhere. I had to find relief from my pain.
I'm so glad I wrote it, so glad for the God given idea. It took my mind off my grief, and channelled it into something worthwhile, something that honours my sister...keeps her memory alive.
Writing and publishing The Shadowed Valley, stirred my imagination, and the desire to write more.
But I know, that no matter how many books I write, or how much I improve in the years to come. The Shadowed Valley will always hold a special place in my heart...always remind me of my sister Celia.    

I loved this book. Gave it Five Stars.

Descended ~ Sebastian by Dana Pratola is wonderful.

Having read and loved the first book Descended ~ Jet, I wondered how I would feel about the authors second book in the series…I loved it!

Mind you, I am still loyal to Jet. Something about his particular character struck a chord with me.

Sebastian is wonderfully witty, gifted, and gorgeous; but for me he didn’t have Jet’s mystique and authority.

Now, this is not a criticism. It is simply, the author writes so well, that I find myself totally involved with these two fascinating characters. And I couldn’t help comparing them.

In this book, Sebastian teams up with Jet to save two young women trapped by evil men in the sex trade. Sebastian falls in love with one of the woman, Natalie, a beautiful redhead. I really liked her character. She is the perfect foil for Sebastian.

I loved the sarcastic humour between Sebastian and Jet, and often found myself laughing.

If you enjoy a clean Christian romance, that is gritty and edgy, you will love, Descended ~ Sebastian.

I do hope there is more of the same to follow…please!
